Of Being

I know this happiness
is provisional

the looming presence
great suffering, great fear

withdraw only
into peripheral vision

but ineluctable this shimmering
of wind in the blue leaves

this flood of stillness
widening the lake of sky

this need to dance,
this need to kneel

this mystery

When Women Were Birds

Once upon a time,
When women were birds,
There was the simple understanding
That to sing at dawn
And to sing at dusk
Was to heal the world through joy.
The birds still remember what we have forgotten,
That the world is meant to be celebrated.

Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars

of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,

the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders

of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is

nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned

in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side

is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

Gleichgewicht

Wir gehen
jeder für sich
den schmalen Weg
über den Köpfen der Toten
- fast ohne Angst -
im Takt unsres Herzens,
als seien wir beschützt,
solange die Liebe nicht aussetzt.

So gehen wir
zwischen Schmetterlingen und Vögeln
in staunendem Gleichgewicht
zu einem Morgen von Baumwipfeln
- grün, gold und blau -
und zu dem Erwachen
der geliebten Augen.
im Takt

The Little Things

It really is the little things
That mean the most of all.
The "let me help you with that" things
That may seem very small
The "I'll be glad to do it" things
That make your cares much lighter,
The "laugh with me, it's funny" things
That make your outlook brighter...

The "never mind the trouble" things,
The "yes, I understand,"
The interest and encouragement
In everything you've planned
It really is the little things,
The friendly word or smile,
That add such happiness to life
And make it more worth while.

The sky is grey The sand is grey And the ocean is grey
And I feel right at home In this stunning monochrome Alone in my way
I smoke and I drink And every time I blink I have a tiny dream
But as bad as I am I'm proud of the fact That I'm worse than I seem
What kind of paradise Am I looking for? I've got everything I want
And still I want more Maybe some tiny shiny key Will wash up on the shore

Wo ist der Freund
der meine Spur in Blumengärten sucht,
dort
wo im Winde nur die Türe ächzt
die ich beim Fortgehn
ach
vergass zu schließen.

An einen Freund

Der unverbrauchte Tag will bitter werden –
nimm deine Gedanken nicht zurück,
doch spare sie auf
und versuche zu reden
von leichteren Dingen,
vielleicht von der Eiszeit,
die unsere Enkel erwartet
und von der Freundlichkeit
weniger unter Wölfen.
Dann lass uns verständig schweigen.

Self-Portrait

She was not a slender woman,
but her skin was milk
mixed in with strawberry jam
& between her legs the word purple was born
& her hair was the color of wheat & yellow butter.

Her eyes were dark as the North Atlantic sea.

She learned the untranslatable words of dawn.
She studied her own fear & wrote its verses.
She used the hole in her heart to play wind-music.
She built her book-houses over her empty cellar.

She nursed on the muse at first,
then became her own mother.

“How one must be thrust out of a finished cycle in life, and that leap is the most difficult to make—to part with one’s faith, one’s love, when one would prefer to renew the faith and re-create the passion. The struggle to emerge out of the past, clean of memories; the inadequacy of our hearts to cut life into separate and final portions; the pain of this constant ambivalence and interrelation of emotions; the hunger for frontiers against which we might learn as upon closed doors before we proceed forward; the struggle against diffusion, new beginnings, against finality in acts without finality or end, in our cursedly repercussive being.”
