When you come to the end of all the light you know,
and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen:
Either you will be given something solid to stand on
or you will be taught to fly.

(Edward Teller)

Langsam stirbt,
wer die Liebe zu sich selbst zerstört;
wer sich nicht helfen lässt.

Langsam stirbt,
wer die Tage damit verbringt,
über sein Unglück
oder über den ununterbrochenen Regen zu klagen.

Langsam stirbt,
wer ein Projekt abschreibt, bevor er es beginnt;
wer keine Fragen stellt zu Argumenten, die er nicht kennt;

(Pablo Neruda)

He who becomes the slave of habit,
who follows the same routes every day,
who never changes pace,
who does not risk and change the color of his clothes,
who does not speak and does not experience,
dies slowly.

He or she who shuns passion,
who prefers black on white,
dotting ones "it’s" rather than a bundle of emotions,
the kind that make your eyes glimmer,
that turn a yawn into a smile,
that make the heart pound in the face of mistakes and feelings,
dies slowly.

He or she who does not turn things topsy-turvy,
who is unhappy at work,
who does not risk certainty for uncertainty,
to thus follow a dream,
those who do not forego sound advice at least once in their lives,
die slowly.

He who does not travel, who does not read,
who does not listen to music,
who does not find grace in himself,
she who does not find grace in herself,
dies slowly.

He who slowly destroys his own self-esteem,
who does not allow himself to be helped,
who spends days on end complaining about his own bad luck,
about the rain that never stops,
dies slowly.

He or she who abandon a project before starting it,
who fail to ask questions on subjects he doesn't know,
he or she who don't reply when they are asked something they do know,
die slowly.

Let's try and avoid death in small doses,
reminding oneself that being alive requires an effort
far greater than the simple fact of breathing.

Only a burning patience will lead
to the attainment of a splendid happiness.

Instants

If I were able to live my life anew,
In the next I would try to commit more errors.
I would not try to be so perfect, I would relax more.
I would be more foolish than I've been,
In fact, I would take few things seriously.
I would be less hygienic.
I would run more risks,
take more vacations,
contemplate more sunsets,
climb more mountains, swim more rivers.
I would go to more places where I've never been,
I would eat more ice cream and fewer beans,
I would have more real problems and less imaginary ones.

I was one of those people that lived sensibly
and prolifically each minute of his life;
Of course I had moments of happiness.
If I could go back I would try
to have only good moments.

Because if you didn't know, of that is life made:
only of moments; Don't lose the now.

I was one of those that never
went anywhere without a thermometer,
a hot-water bottle,
an umbrella, and a parachute;
If I could live again, I would travel lighter.

If I could live again,
I would begin to walk barefoot from the beginning of spring
and I would continue barefoot until autumn ends.
I would take more cart rides,
contemplate more dawns,
and play with more children,
If I had another life ahead of me.

But already you see, I am 85,
and I know that I am dying.

Mit dem Schlimmsten rechnen
als wäre es schon geschehen

Runter
von der Überholspur

Das eigene Gewissen erforschen
nicht das der anderen

Erinnerungen füttern
wie Vögel im Winter
damit sie noch einmal singen
als wäre es wieder Sommer
und Juni und du so nah

Black March

I have a friend
At the end
Of the world.
His name is a breath

Of fresh air.
He is dressed in
Grey chiffon. At least
I think it is chiffon.
It has a
Peculiar look, like smoke.

It wraps him round
It blows out of place
It conceals him
I have not seen his face.

But I have seen his eyes, they are
As pretty and bright
As raindrops on black twigs
In March, and heard him say:

I am a breath
Of fresh air for you, a change
By and by.

Black March I call him
Because of his eyes
Being like March raindrops
On black twigs.

(Such a pretty time when the sky
Behind black twigs can be seen
Stretched out in one
Uninterrupted
Cambridge blue as cold as snow.)

But this friend
Whatever new names I give him
Is an old friend. He says:

Whatever names you give me
I am
A breath of fresh air,
A change for you.

In meinem Haus
da wohne ich,
da schlafe ich,
da esse ich,
und wenn du willst,
dann öffne ich
die Tür
und lass' dich ein.

In meinem Haus
da lache ich,
da weine ich,
da träume ich,
und wenn ich will,
dann schließe ich
die Tür
und bin allein.

say yes

this is for the no becoming yes
for scars becoming breath
for saying i love you to people who will never say it to us
for scraping away the rust and remembering how to shine
for the dime you gave away when you didn’t have a penny
for the many beautiful things we do
for every song we’ve ever sung
for refusing to believe in miracles
because miracles are the impossible coming true
and everything is possible

this is for the possibility that guides us
and for the possibilities still waiting to sing
and spread their wings inside us
cause tonight saturn is on his knees
proposing with all of his ten thousand rings
that whatever song we’ve been singing we sing even more
the world needs us right now more than it ever has before
pull all your strings
play every chord
if you’re writing letters to the prisoners
start tearing down the bars
if you’re handing our flashlights in the dark
start handing our stars
never go a second hushing the percussion of your heart
play loud
play like you know the clouds have left too many people cold and broken
and you’re their last chance for sun
play like there’s no time for hoping brighter days will come
play like the apocalypse is only 4…3…2
but you have a drum in your chest that could save us
you have a song like a breath that could raise us
like the sunrise into a dark sky that cries to be blue
play like you know we won’t survive if you don’t
but we will if you do
play like saturn is on his knees
proposing with all of his ten thousand rings
that we give every single breath
this is for saying–yes

Selbstbild

Von den vielen
die ich bin
sind alle
mir unbekannt
nur vom Hörensagen
kenne ich
den einen
die andere
flüchtig
bleibe ich
mir
auf der Spur

"She wasn't where she had been. She wasn't where she was going…but she was on her way. And on her way she enjoyed food that wasn't fast, friendships that held, hearts glowing, hearts breaking, smiles that caught tears, paths trudged and alleys skipped. And on her way she no longer looked for the answers, but held close the two things she knew for sure. One, if a day carried strength in the morning, peace in the evening, and a little joy in between, it was a good one…and two, you can live completely without complete understanding." (Jodi Hills)

Wir sind aufeinander angewiesen,
wir brauchen alle einen,
der unsere Widersprüche
in sich aufhebt
und sich nicht verweigert,
einen, der redet,
auch wenn er schweigt.

I hope you dance

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance... I hope you dance...

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance,
Living might mean taking chances, but they're worth taking,
Loving might be a mistake, but it's worth making,
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to selling out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance:

I hope you dance... I hope you dance.

heute nacht
ging es vor anker
anders als erwartet
... schäbig und leck
geschlagen und ich
auf der pier
aufgetakelt
setz die
einstudierten
schritte
ein bisschen
scheu ein bisschen
anbiedernd
den seesack
geschultert
das bündel seele
zuviel gepäck

All my mistakes have become masterpieces...

Am Rande

Manchmal auf einer Schwelle sitzen,
ausruhn vom Gehn, das nicht ankommt,
die Türe hinter dir und nicht klopfen.

Alle Geräusche wahrnehmen
und keines verursachen.
Das Leben, das dich nicht annimmt, erhören:
im Haus, auf der Straße,
das Herz der Maus und des Motors,
die Stimmen von Luft und Wasser,
die Schritte des Menschen, der Sterne,
das Seufzen von Erde und Stein.

Manchmal setzt sich das Licht zu dir
und manchmal der Schatten,
treue Geschwister.
Staub will nisten auf dir
und unbetretbarer Schnee.

Langsam unter der Zunge
wärmt sich dein letztes Wort.
